Family hopes release of U.S. activist will shed light on mother’s murder

January 29, 2025
The family of a Mi’kmaq woman from Nova Scotia who was shot to death, execution-style, in 1975 is hoping Leonard Peltier can shed some light on her murder. When Mr. Peltier finally walks away from a U.S. federal penitentiary next month, it will be the conclusion of a decades-long campaign to free the American Indian Movement member convicted of killing two FBI agents. In one of his final acts as U.S. President, Joe Biden commuted his life sentence Monday, calling it an example of government mistreatment of Native Americans. But the family of Anna Mae Aquash, who died at the hands of fellow AIM members, sees Mr. Peltier’s release as an opportunity for him to disclose what, if anything, he knows about her killing.
