Hour 1 of Ottawa Now for Thurs. April 3rd, 2025

April 3, 2025
Less than 24 hours after the U.S. launched auto tariffs on Canada, our country is returning the favour. Mark Carney, acting in his capacity as Prime Minister, made the announcement official earlier today. America has stricken Canada with 25 percent tariffs on various Auto sector parts. For any U.S. vehicles who are not compliant with CUSMA, Canada will be slapping 25 percent retaliatory tariffs on every single one of them. Meantime, the fallout from these tariffs has already begun, as automaker Stellantis has made the difficult decision to shut down its massive Windsor assembly plant for 2 straight weeks. In America, 900 workers have also received temporary layoffs. Kristy Cameron digs deeper into these troubling times with Charles Bernard, a lead economist with the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association. But first, we bring you up to speed on today’s top headlines.
