Brothers plead guilty in cross-border smuggling of 45,000 kg of tobacco, CBSA says

Canadian border officials say two brothers have pleaded guilty to several charges after attempting to smuggle large amounts of tobacco into the country. Investigators with the Canada Border Services Agency in Niagara Falls say James and Jason McDuffie attempted to smuggle a total of 45,620 kilograms of contraband tobacco in a commercial truck.

Two girls, aged 13 and 14, have been charged with assault after an alleged swarming attack in Oshawa, Ont., last week while three other youths, including an 11-year-old, are considered suspects, police said Friday. But Durham Region police said there’s “no evidence” at this time that hate was an aggravating factor in the alleged attack on a Muslim woman whose hijab was ripped off.
