City of Ottawa receives Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program funding

Ottawa - A recent $600,000 investment from Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) is helping power Ottawa’s green future by supporting the installation of EV charging infrastructure.

With this funding, the City will install a total of 59 EV charging stations across Ottawa to support the greening of the municipal fleet. The first project to benefit from this funding will be the EV charging hub at the Mary Pitt Centre, where 12 Level 2 and one Level 3 charging stations will be installed by the end of the year. An additional 12 chargers will be installed next year.  

The work and funding are in line with the City’s overall Green Fleet Strategy, to help adopt emerging vehicle technologies. The strategy supports the Council-approved goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 100 per cent below 2012 levels by 2040.  

The transition to greener vehicles is expected to save more than $6 million, while also bringing the Cty closer to meeting the targets outlined in the Climate Change Master Plan by 2040. The implementation of EV infrastructure plays a key role in meeting those goals. 

In addition to the funding for the municipal fleet, the City of Ottawa has also been awarded $170,000 to support the installation of 16 EV charging stations for public use at six municipal parking garages and lots. This installation will include 14 level 2 chargers and two level 3 chargers. 

This project represents a significant investment by the City of Ottawa in the expansion of its EV charging network and demonstrates the City’s ongoing commitment to increasing support for electric and hybrid vehicles in the nation’s capital.  

Installation of these chargers is scheduled to begin next year.
