Alberta teachers reject government contract offer, setting up provincewide strike

Alberta teachers have rejected the provincial government’s latest contract offer, setting the stage for a provincewide strike next week.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association, which represents 51,000 teachers across the province, announced Monday that 90 per cent of those who voted rejected the deal.

Alberta’s provincial health agency did not follow its own policies for two major contracts, one for procuring children’s pain medication from Turkey and another for opening a private surgical clinic in Edmonton, according to an independent review commissioned by Premier Danielle Smith’s government.Raymond Wyant, a retired judge from Manitoba, this week submitted his 43-page report examining alleged procurement and contracting problems at Alberta Health Services. The government made the report public Friday.
