Ottawa Now - Did Ontario's Premier play his cards right in the Canada-U.S. trade war?

October 27, 2025

As Canadians and Americans alike tuned in to watch the 2025 World Series, the Ford government was rolling out a set of controversial ads. Well, they were controversial in the eyes of U.S. President Donald Trump, who was extremely fed up after a video of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan was used by Queen’s Park to notify Americans about the dangers of tariffs. Trump has since called off all trade discussions with Canada until further notice, and that tone hasn’t changed after those ads were pulled on Monday. From airing these ads in the first place, to pulling them so soon, how would you grade Premier Ford’s gameplan? Alex Marland is a Professor of Political Science at Acadia University who studies political communication. He says the ads were well-crafted and effective, and he tips his cap to the province for how they handled Trump’s pushback. And while Trump claimed that Ontario warped Ronald Reagan’s words in the actual ad, Marland says he doesn’t see an issue there. He joins Kristy Cameron on today's Ottawa Now.
