Alberta to hold public consultation on which books should be banned from school libraries
May 26, 2025
Alberta’s government is planning to set new standards for school libraries by the fall, prohibiting books that the province deems age-inappropriate because of what it says is explicit sexual content. Demetrios Nicolaides, the province’s education and childcare minister, said Monday that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s government has found inconsistent standards among school libraries. That‘s why schools boards are forced to take different approaches to the books available for kindergarten to Grade 12 students, without strong enough safeguards in place, he said.
Apple, Amazon, Spotify, and others are challenging a CRTC order to fund Canadian content, arguing it’s unfair and exceeds the regulator’s authority under the law.
