Toronto’s new island promises a greener, livelier city

Rasmus Astrup has a promise about Ookwemin Minising, the island that will be Toronto’s next waterfront neighbourhood. It will be weird. “This island is a place like nowhere else,” the Danish landscape architect said this week. “The design has to be special; it has to be a little quirky.”Quirkiness isn’t Toronto’s default setting, but Mr. Astrup and his practice SLA will get to bring some. They’ve been hired on a team to rework Ookwemin (formerly Villiers Island), the 40-hectare new district on Toronto’s port lands framed by the Don River. This year they’ll deliver a design for the streets and parks; they will also review the plan to find room for more housing.

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency says the northern town of La Ronge has ordered an evacuation due to a wildfire that has breached the airport.It says the fire is fast moving and that people in the town, as well as anyone within 20 kilometres, including nearby Air Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, must leave immediately.

The operators of a British Columbia ostrich flock that’s facing a cull order after an avian flu outbreak are calling for independent testing of the birds to prevent their “unnecessary destruction.”Katie Pasitney, whose mother co-owns Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, B.C., issued a statement on Monday, saying the nearly 400 ostriches are healthy and have shown no signs of illness for more than four months.
