Crime bill with tougher bail, sentencing provisions coming in fall, justice minister says

The Liberal government will table a bill this fall introducing stricter bail conditions and sentencing for some crimes, particularly those involving organized crime, human trafficking, home invasion and car theft, Justice Minister Sean Fraser said in an interview.“It’s perhaps obvious, given the tenor around the criminal justice system, that reforms are in order,” Fraser told The Canadian Press.
Just for Laughs founder Gilbert Rozon testified Wednesday that he had consensual relations with three of the nine women suing him for sexual assault and misconduct. On his third day of testimony during his civil trial for sexual assault, Rozon began to respond to the allegations against him. The nine women are seeking nearly $14-million in damages over alleged sexual abuse.

Fewer Canadians died from opioid overdoses last year, new national data show, but a regional breakdown paints a complicated picture of the drug toxicity crisis that eased in some provinces but worsened in others.The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) released on Wednesday figures on substance-related deaths and harms in 2024. Nearly 7,150 opioid deaths were reported last year, a 13-per-cent decline compared with 2023. There was also a 22-per-cent reduction in stimulant deaths.
