Who says goalies can’t be captains?

April 27, 2025
Growing up, Mark Carney played hockey as a goalie for Laurier Heights, according to his campaign website. - Mark Carney campaign website

Canada needs a captain to lead it forward. Mark Carney is that person.

Hockey goalies have a  reputation in Canada as fearless for willingly standing in front a frozen piece of rubber traveling at hight speeds. It’s not a position for the faint of heart.

One of the rules for goaltenders Canadians know well is that goalies are not allowed to be the team captain because they can’t cross the red line. Not legally anyway.  Another rule.

But in many ways, the goalie is often one of the team's leaders--Because without a good goalie, no team can win the championship.

Something most people don't know about hockey goalies is that they have essentially been trained from a young age to predict the future.  A goaltender's job is to stop the puck by anticipating the play before it happens. A goalie must therefore analyze what is happening in real-time, often within split seconds, and make the right decision to stop the puck, over and over again.

This skill is transferable to life outside of hockey and is a trait many goalies have honed to perfection over time, whether on or off the ice.

I have supported Mark Carney since his time at the Bank of Canada. If Stephen Harper thought he did a good job, even though he isn't a Conservative, then that's high praise for sure. When he publicly stated it, I knew Mark Carney would make a great future leader. But, now that I've learned Mr. Carney is also a hockey goalie, I am sure he is the right person for the job of Prime Minister of Canada, at this very challenging time.

Because someone who can predict the future is also someone who can shape the future.

Its time for a goalie to put on the 'C'...
